The Old Testament Scriptures

 

Isaiah 11: 1 – 10 –  In which Isaiah has a vision of the coming kingdom of God.

Psalm 72: 1 – 7, 18 – 19 –  In which the psalmist extols the righteous rule of the King’s Son.

 

The New Testament Scriptures

 

Romans 15: 4 – 13:  In which St. Paul writes to the congregation at Rome that they ought to rejoice in the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy regarding the stump of Jesse, which was fulfilled in Christ Jesus.

 

Matthew 3: 1 – 12 –  In which John the Baptist cries out in the wilderness, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord!”

Organ Prelude and Postlude –  Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming and Prelude in A Minor by Johannes Brahms.

Lou Carol’s Organ Notes –  Today’s prelude is a free adaptation of the Advent hymn #81.  Brahms decorates the melody with many chromatic inflections and melodic figurations.  Manual changes from soft to loud differentiate the phrases of the chorale.
